Classplan for today, 1/16/09
Each of you should take out a piece of paper and write the following:
- 5 best things about America
- 5 worst things about America
- 5 changes you think will happen in the next 5-50 years (and rough timeframe)
- 5 changes you wish would happen in the next 5-50 years. This category may overlap.
We will also talk about your freshman seminars and the differences between the two classes. We may even discuss the City on the Hill.
For next class, you will read and watch this speech. Print out the text and bring it to class. Write a 2-paragraph reaction to the speech now that you have read it. What is the vision? What stands between the vision and reality? Is it a plan or a utopian ideal?
Also read and print out: The Declaration of Independence and the preamble to the U.S. Constitution.
Finally – what is a Utopia? I want you to go to the Oxford English Dictionary, find the definition, print it out, read it, and bring it to class. You will find the Oxford English Dictionary on our library page, A-Z list of databases, and under “O.” I have deliberately not given you a link!
